What the hell? I have no idea why I would instruct myself to do this, but since it’s my handwriting and it’s written on the strange guy I spent the night beside, I oblige my own wishes. I find several backups from HiveMind, all captured yesterday. Weird. I sometimes back up my HiveMind account but not every few hours. There’s already a compare-simulation script open—though I don’t recall writing one—so I run it again, my heart thumping with every tick of the clock as it runs thanks to the warning I left myself to be quick.

A ding from the compare simulation resounds. Two lists appear, one tallying the discrepancies between my last backup and live HiveMind, and one for Sebastian’s. I grip the white sheets with my fingers so tightly I create starbursts in the fabric. Holy isotopes, something’s wrong with HiveMind. Thousands of memories have disappeared from our minds overnight but still exist in my backups. Most memories are from yesterday and contain titles like: Asking Zoey if she knows what my project is. Backward flashback propositioning Bash to work on a project together. Trying to figure out who might hate me. Deleting Veronica’s and Eliza’s memories. Writing secrets on each other’s backs.

Panic builds in my body, erupting in a series of shakes. None of that makes any sense. I never asked Zoey about my project. I have no idea who Bash is. With trembling hands, I modify an existing script that will copy over the missing files from the backups one by one into both our HiveMind accounts. This amount of data will take over an hour to transfer.

“What’s happening?” Sebastian points at his mind, where the first memory has started replaying.

“We’re going to find out.” I sink onto the bed beside him. The events from yesterday fall into place in my mind, marching in exact chronological order. Discovering Sebastian’s mind was blank except for latent knowledge. Printing a replica of an eye. Making out with Bash in his bedroom. All the info we discovered about not remembering our project and all the suspects I dismissed. It all thunders back into me, wrenching my gut.

Sebastian’s phone keeps ringing and ringing, but we both ignore it as we let the memories return to us. I kissed him in the past. I held his hand in the recent present. I wanted to do both things again last night.

I swallow hard, my shoulders filling with courage. Before I can second-guess myself, I reach over and grab his hand. I lace my fingers with his and he gives me a squeeze in return. We stay like that, clutching each other, as the rest of the memories steal our breaths.

When they’re finally all accounted for, he gasps out, “Holy shit. Someone deliberately erased every single thought related to our investigation while we slept.”

“They got rid of the entire day from both our minds to erase any progress we’d made.” The words taste vile in my mouth. There’s no doubt now: Someone’s monitoring us.

Sebastian
